The Rise of the Gilet
The lightweight, padded version of this sleeveless jacket (also known as a body warmer) is as popular today as ever. Not surprisingly we have seen a significant increase in bespoke orders for their more sturdy and stylish cousins, leading us to introduce a new ready-to-wear gilet collection.
Contemporary Gilets represent the most modern incarnation of a shape that has been around for hundreds of years. Originating in garments worn by European peasants, as far back as the 15th century, these sleeveless jackets were usually made from leather. Their main functions were to give added warmth and ease of movement to the wearer, both of which remain at the heart of the gilet’s appeal to this day.
Not just for those keen on outdoor pursuits like hunting, shooting and fishing, the qualities of a gilet transfer equally well to the man about town. An ideal add-on for suits and casual weekend separates, the gilet also provides versatility when the seasons begin to change.
Traditional tweeds, checks and Donnegals are by far the most popular cloth choices for bespoke gilets. With this in mind we have selected 6 cloth designs, in a variety of colourways, to develop a capsule range for the modern gentleman’s wardrobe.
