A collaboration with globally renowned brand icon illustrator, Chris Mitchell, to deliver Bob, the mascot for our new branding.

———————–

We took a trip down to Epic Icon’s HQ, in Chichester, to catch up with illustrator Chris Mitchell, an artist responsible for developing some of the world‘s most familiar brand and corporate identity icons – many having become global classics of our time.

Our short film features Chris, in discussion with our MD, James Sleater, capturing aspects of the creative process leading to the delivery our new company icon. With a similar approach to ours, Chris’ work is rooted in the heritage of the illustration craft while also embracing aspects of modern technology to realise and deliver his work at the highest level.

The results gave us Bob in two incarnations – a full body side profile, and a striking portrait. Conveying strength, authority and poise, we’re delighted with the results, which will be introduced across aspects of our branding in the coming months.

Taking you through the bespoke tailoring experience, this video shows the steps we use to make every customer’s bespoke suit.

the-savile-row-bespoke-process

Starting with fabric selection, our tailors guide customers through selection from our thousands of English and Italian cloths.

the-savile-row-bespoke-process

After a full set of measurements are taken, our tailors make up a partial suit as a kind of ‘rough draft’ for the client to try on before final adjustments. This is called a toile fitting, the purpose of which is to ensure a perfect fit.

the-savile-row-bespoke-process

the-savile-row-bespoke-experience

It’s these interim fittings that makes a suit ‘bespoke,’ as well as being the hallmark of Savile Row tailors.

Finally, a master craftsman finishes the garment, with finishers hand-sewing every buttonhole to complete the suit.

In early December we made the pilgrimage to the historic steel capital of England, Sheffield, to commission Andrew – the last Putter in Europe – to make bespoke tailoring shears for our cutters.

As any tradesmen will know, the best tools produce the best work and the guys at William Whitely, where Andrew works, really are the Savile Row of the scissor industry. When Andrew retires he will take his craft with him, leaving the company to look to the future and, with it, more modern manufacturing techniques.

making-bespoke-tailoring-shears

Quality scissors last generations and whilst it is still possible to commission bespoke tailoring shears, made under the hands of the last master, we decided to have our own unique sets made, to honour and support a leading light in British Craftmanship.

making-bespoke-tailoring-shears

The shears made by Andrew and William Whiteley are as unique as the suits we make, each one starting its life being cut by these blades. We documented the making by taking two customers to capture the process in both video and photo. We hope their images convey the craft and talent that goes into making every pair of bespoke tailoring shears whilst also paying homage to the skills of Andrew, and all like him in British industry.

This month sees the launch of our first House Tweed, a signature cloth commissioned specifically with our customers in mind. The ground shade is a classic mustard, while the over-check introduces a dash of colour in gold and soft blue, a design suited to any modern tailored wardrobe.

Woven in Huddersfield using age-old methods, the cloth has a handle that can only be achieved using the best raw woollen yarn and the natural softness of the local Penine water. All these elements combine to create a cloth with unrivalled character and quality.

Weighing in at a versatile 12oz / 370g, the key to any contemporary tweed is combining patterns that are flexible enough to cover a range of garments that are wearable practically all year round —sports coats, suits and trousers that can be worn in either city or country, to formal receptions and casual weekend outings alike — yet remain suitably functional and hard wearing.

Savile Row has been the centre of bespoke tailoring for hundreds of years. Meet our team of tailors and cutters, talking about their passion for bespoke tailoring and how our innovative approach aims to secure and inspire the future of Savile Row.

With the craft itself having changed little over the centuries, our suits are still cut from individual paper patterns, using the imperial measuring system of this age-old tradition. Mixing this with an eye for technology and innovation, “We’re making bespoke tailoring more modern and accessible, whilst still being traditional,” says tailor John Baker.

Shot entirely at our Savile Row shop, this video was made by Hogarth Worldwide, a London based marketing implementation agency, who sent a production team along to film us for the day. You can read a full transcript of the video below.

James, C&D Founder/Director : Nowadays a website is really your shop front. And we’ve always treated it like a window display. We want to give people the option to see what we’re doing before they come in and really be aware of the pricing. To try and break down hidden boundaries behind tailoring, to show the different style options, as many different cloths as possible, simply to put people at ease before they come through the door.

The first stage is the consultation process. A very important part of that process is obviously selecting the cloth. That’s really going to determine what the suit looks like.

John, Tailor/Front of House: We’re making tailoring more modern and accessible whilst still being traditional.

Mike, Tailor/Front of House: The great thing about us as a company is we’re very forward thinking. We integrate technology into the equation, so when we’re going through the design process the customer will have an on screen visualisation when we’re talking about different design details.

James, C&D Founder/Director: We spend a good amount of time with the customer finding out what the suit is needed for – whether its a wedding, whether it’s a work suit – because the cloths will need to reflect that. The customer will then get measured. It’s about accommodating that customer and what he wants, within our house style.

We will then make a pattern for that customer – jacket pattern, trouser pattern, waistcoat pattern, overcoat pattern, whatever it is – so the pattern becomes every customer’s blueprint. That’s stored on file so any subsequent orders will be always cut off that. Once it’s made, we try to turn a flat piece of fabric into a three dimensional fitting. It’s an art form and it takes us about 60 hours to make a hand made suit. We have to amalgamate all the different components of that suit and there are different people involved in the making of it.

David, Head Cutter: You do need that something extra to bring the next generation of bespoke client’s through the door. What Cad & The Dandy are doing is always innovating. Tweed has got a bit of a staid reputation. When you come to Cad & The Dandy you’re going to see tweeds cut in exciting colours, exciting designs, worn with panache. It gives people a bit of a lift. People come here and they think ‘wow!’

Rhiannon, Cutter: Cad & The Dandy have quite a flexible approach to tailoring. So in my experience they will work on a variety of garments using different cloths.

James, C&D Founder/Director: We’re trying to get everybody involved in everything. I don’t really like businesses where you’re just going to section the work. That’s not to say that I want a coatmaker of mine to make a pair of trousers. Everyone has to have their own area of skill, but I think it’s very important that everyone is very customer facing.

You’re never too old to learn. It’s all about adapting and changing so hopefully in ten years time we’ll be as reactive and as able to change with trends and demands as we are today. I can’t imagine doing anything else.
