After reminising about the sartorial and gastronomical elegance of Pitti 103, Cad & The Dandy is pulling focus back to Great Britain and honouring Scottish craftsmanship. Burn’s Night celebrations are abound this week and Cad & The Dandy will be toasting the master poet with a dram of our very own Scotch whisky.

Few things speak of luxury like a fine whisky. As with tailoring, quality whisky is driven by tradition, materials used, and skill employed in the making. It was therefore imperative that Cad & The Dandy whisky reflected the care and intent ingrained in our tailors. We partnered with former Caol Ila Distillery manager David Wood, who selected a rare and rich single cask, single malt whisky on our behalf. We have 24 signed and numbered bottles.

This is what makes Cad & the Dandy whisky so special:

Region – Highland. Distilled at Blair Athol, Pitlochry, Perthshire. Established in 1798, this distillery is steeped in history, even drawing water from an ancient source. The Allt Dour Burn flows into the grounds from the peaks of Ben Vrackie and contributes to the whisky’s mellow quality

Age – 12 years old
Cask Type – American oak
Strength – 55% ABV, natural cask strength
Look – Auburn, no artificial colouring. Clear with no chill filtration.
Aroma – Woody
Taste – Soft, vanilla, caramel
Finish – Smooth

cad-and-the-dandy-whisky-label

Artistry – Original, bespoke label designed and painted by Dr Curly; a graphic artist who specialises in watercolour painting with toothbrushes. This technique is a modern take on a traditional style, producing a strikingly bold and textured image. Curly imbued his design with muted earthy colours that reflect not the style of the whisky and the Cad & the Dandy logo.

Cad & The Dandy are proud to be partnering with Ukrainian bespoke atelier Indposhiv, in this charitable initiative in support of victims of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, via a series of unique designed pocket squares.

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Indposhiv has created a War in Ukraine series of silk pocket squares. Featuring original and vibrant drawings from children affected by the conflict, as well as one illustration in muted colours with a final farewell theme, by the Odessa based artist Tina Tikhonenko.

All donations from the sales go to support Ukraine’s Armed Forces and humanitarian charities for Ukrainians affected by the conflict via the charitable foundation Come Back Alive .

Kateryna Vozianova, the founder of Indposhiv, established her brand and atelier in 2009 at the same time Cad & The Dandy set up shop in London. Her brand has grown from strength to strength, establishing her business as a leader in luxury and bespoke clothing in Ukraine.

Seeing a great synergy and similarity with our story, we are immensely proud of our partnership with Indoshiv and we will be stocking the pocket squares in all of our stores, alongside the original prints, all available for sale.

Individual pocket squares cost £65, 100% of which goes to Charity.

MORE ABOUT INDPOSHIV

Based in Kyiv, Ukrainian entrepreneur Kateryna Vozianova is the founder of two bespoke clothing brands Indposhiv and Heroism. Ukraine had very few mens ateliers before Kateryna entered the market in 2009, but none had focused solely on the culture and craft of bespoke, which became Kateryna’s goal.

Indposhiv started out tailoring suits for Kateryna’s husband and friends. Applying her many years of marketing expertise, gained from her earlier career at global brand Gillette, Indposhiv’s clientele steadily grew.

Attracting a loyal following of high profile clients, all paid tribute to the quality and service provided by their tailoring workshop where they employ 70 tailors in the heart of Kyiv. Today, some of Indposhiv’s most prominent clients include Ukraine’s President, Mr Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Denys Shmygal, and Hollywood star, Jean-Claude Van Damme.

With the outbreak of Covid-19, in 2020, the challenge of maintaining production resulted in further expansion into the domestic market. Thus the bespoke brand Heroism was founded to provide outstanding women’s tailoring services in Ukraine, to match the men’s services available at Indposhiv. This launch resulted in 2 years of the most rapid growth in the group’s history.

In the 13 years since launching Indposhiv, Kateryna has become a well-known business woman in Ukraine, with a strong personal profile. She regularly shares her expertise at high profile business events, across inspirational YouTube channels and on a variety of podcasts. She is married with 2 young children and still lives in the centre of Kyiv with her two young children and her husband, an investment banker and military reservist awaiting call-up.

Amongst the top 25 restaurants in the world, we were approached to design a new tailoring concept for The Ledbury’s front of house team, as part of their recent re-launch.

the-ledbury-restaurant-notting-hill-interior

Located in London’s Notting Hill, The Ledbury is one of the city’s destination eateries, founded in 2005 by Australian chef Brett Graham. Winning himself two Michelin stars and a serious foodie following, tables are in high demand, and best reserved a few months ahead.

the ledbury restaurant kitchen

With service being one of the things that sets The Ledbury apart, we were set the task of dressing staff to maintain a clean, crisp appearance through busy shifts, in varying temperatures, with spillages being par for the course. Mixing a muted and tonal visual approach with a durable and high performance fabric, we also wanted to complement the redesign of the space and the pace of restaurant life.

Each member of the team was measured individually for bespoke suits and shirts – a process that took 12 weeks, creating paper patterns for all. We developed a dark charcoal fresco suit, with a dark brown lining and brown horn buttons, paired with off-white cotton poplin shirts and dark green wool ties. All the colours were picked from the restaurant’s interior, inspired by the British countryside.

the-ledbury-suits

The fresco cloth, supplied by Huddersfield Fine Worsted, was chosen for its durability and anti-crease qualities, resulting in suits that looks as sharp at the end of a long shift as they did at the beginning, whilst regulating body temperature and surviving those inevitable occasional spills.

With all involved delighted at the end result, the entire collaborative process has been a truly successful meeting of minds, with joint values in craftsmanship and quality to the fore.

From now until the end of June, Cad & The Dandy’s New York Penthouse will be exhibiting portraits of Jean-Michel Basquiat, taken by Richard Corman in 1984. A prolific portrait photographer, Corman has captured subjects including Muhammad Ali, Ralph Lauren, Paul Newman, Madonna and Nelson Mandela in a career spanning four decades. His work has appeared in numerous publications including Vanity Fair, Vogue, Rolling Stone and Architectural Digest.

The exhibition, created in partnership with Manhattan restaurant and art gallery Frevo, depicts the late artist wearing an oversized herringbone jacket—a synergy between style, self-expression, and New York that we couldn’t resist. We sat down with Corman to discuss the shoot, working with Basquiat, and the power of clothing.

*This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

C&D: When and where were these photos taken?
RC: The shoot was in New York City, in 1984, at 57 Great Jones Street, a studio Andy Warhol had given to Jean-Michel, now a landmark building with a plaque detailing Basquiat’s time living there.

jean-michel-basquiat-portrait

C&D: How did that herringbone jacket get involved?
RC:
I shot it for L’Uomo Vogue, so style and fashion was a part of it. I was told to take the herringbone tweed jacket with me and to make sure he wore it. So, not only did he wear it, but he owned it. In the shoot, it became a part of him. You would never know that it was a prop, because it certainly never felt like a fashion shoot. It was a portrait of a complicated genius who was introverted, angry and extremely charismatic.

C&D: What was it like shooting Basquiat?
RC:
When I walked into that studio the energy was so compelling. There must have been 30 young people there, smoking and drinking and painting with music permeating throughout the space. When I walked in, Jean-Michel was huddled in a corner in a very shy manner. I went up and introduced myself and asked if we could move to a quieter area, where I taped a sheet of grey seamless paper to the wall. I was intrigued to see what was behind his eyes. He was incredibly present for me and we were able to capture some iconic photographs.

C&D: I’m glad you brought the blazer up, because it feels like a remarkable part of the portraits.
RC:
All the other clothes he wore were his, and when we put the blazer on it just seemed right! The reason I wanted to put these photographs in Cad & The Dandy’s new space is because I liked the vibe, but also because you guys are artists and artisans too, creating bespoke suits with the most beautiful fabrics in the world and, like me, are incredibly passionate about what you do.

C&D: Why do you think that blazer had such presence in the series?
RC:
Because he just owned it for that hour or two, he put it on, and he was almost unaware that he had it on; it just became a part of him. It was also because he was so unique. You didn’t know if he was happy or sad or angry. He was introspective. It became kind of a shell, I almost felt it protected him.

He allowed himself to become so vulnerable in these photographs… There wasn’t a lot said during the shoot but there was a lot that I felt he was able to share with me in a very quiet, reflective manner.

jean-michel-basquiat-portrait

C&D: What was the context of his career at the time?
RC:
This was ’84, he died in 1988 when he was 28, so I’m assuming he’s 24. Warhol had been promoting him and engaging with him artistically, and I think on both a business and emotional level it was daunting for Jean-Michel. He certainly wasn’t selling paintings for 100 million dollars as he is today, but he was somebody to be reckoned with… There are a handful of people I’ve had the opportunity to photograph and spend a little bit of time with that you just knew were destined for greatness.

C&D: What makes the series relevant today?
RC:
He was always relevant, but these portraits feel as if this is someone who could walk into a room emanating a very cool, artistic vibe. It’s exciting to have launched the book, “BASQUIAT – A Portrait” in 2018 and exciting to share this collection now with Cad & The Dandy.

art-at-the-penthouse

C&D: How do you think the portraits factor into the space?
RC:
I think these images really stand on their own. Savile Row tailoring is something you think of as being quite conservative, and yet I know that a lot of those artisans have designed classic menswear using the finest and at times the most outrageous fabrics! I think these photographs have a youthful, thoughtful edge which is relevant to Cad & The Dandy, and Jean-Michel, and hopefully to myself.

All prints are available to purchase. Prices and further details can be found via the catalogue below.

As winter kicks in, we’re asking our team of tailors to give us the lowdown on their individual taste, style and extensive tailoring knowledge. One tailor at a time, the second in our series sees James Graham-Brown in conversation with Beth Bisney, at The Service, 32 Savile Row, the street’s only dedicated coffee shop, exhibition and retail space.

B: That’s a very autumnal colour palette you’re sporting today James.

J: It is indeed! I’ve based it on these new cord trousers that I’m giving a trial run around Savile Row.

B: Yes let’s talk about these. The first pair of trousers in Cad’s ready-to-wear collection, is that right?

J: Yep, they’re the first. These are the olive, from a collection of three colourways, the other two being dark navy and a creamy corn colour. They’re all flat fronted with buckle side adjusters in a nice heavy 8 wale corduroy (that’s a hefty 8 cord ribs per inch of fabric).

B: Just looking at the sample cards, the cloth has a composition of 97% cotton and 3% elastane.

J: That’s right. The 3% gives the trousers just a touch of stretch, making them super comfortable and easy to wear; 100% cotton corduroy can be quite rigid and restricting.

B: Especially in a trouser, I’d imagine.

J: Exactly. For jackets that stiffness is fine but with a pair of trousers you really want them to move with you.

B: So, what would you typically wear your cords with? Have you got any styling tips up your sleeve for keeping warm and looking sharp through the wintery weather?

J: To be honest, you’ve caught me on a good day today, I’m quite pleased with this look! The olive cords, a burnt orange chunky knit lambswool jumper, from Percival Menswear, layered over my warmest tee, topped off with an Oatmeal Wool Gilet also from the Cad ready-to-wear range. A totally autumnal palette if ever there was one.

As far as seasonal dressing goes, winter is by far my favourite because it’s all about the outerwear. Taking it from the top, for me a greatcoat is the smartest and hardest working of all the overcoats, followed by a pea coat, for its distinctive style and ease of everyday wear.

All manner of chunky knits and fine merino jumpers work just as well under these coats as they do layered with overshirts, wax jackets and gilets. Pair with the cords in any of the three staple colours (olive, navy, cream) for a head to toe winter warmer feel. Not forgetting the addition of a good scarf, for that all important finishing touch – I feel everyone should have their signature scarf!

B: Thanks James, some great ideas there. No doubt we’ll see you in a few of these looks on the Gram soon.

J: Indeed!

Our ready-to-wear cord trouser collection is available to pre order now. Please email savilerow@cadandthedandy.co.uk with enquiries.
